Summary
Philosophical writing on aesthetics often has a problematic readership within art. The impulse to understand what attracts us to art and beauty leads us almost immediately into a thicket of questions. Is there an ‘art’ that all artworks participate in? Do works exist in their own right or are they expressions or relations of persons and institutions? Is beauty a judgement or an affect? From the point of view of the practitioner or the art historian, aesthetics is both fascinating and repellent. It asks the fundamental questions but in so doing takes us away from our initial orientation to the work. The intellectual adventure of attempting to understand how we appreciate nature and make art becomes instruction, often conflicting instructions, on how we ought to be in the world.
A route to escape this thicket of aesthetics is offered here in Bart Verschaffel’s writings on aesthetics, and it is no mistake that the word ‘aesthetics’ does not appear in the title. The mode of the essay allows Verschaffel to open questions proper to aesthetics but to stay with the object or issue under inquiry. How can we have a discourse on beauty, one that is broad enough to encompass the beauty of persons and artefacts? How can we understand the artwork as a thing and as an individual and a culture's capacity for making? Such fundamental questions of aesthetics are not answered in this volume, but they are departed from and arrived at anew in language that is immediate and compelling.
Verschaffel trained in philosophy and history and has built a career teaching architectural theory and the philosophy of culture to architects at Ghent University. He has been instrumental in conceptualising what research in architecture should be in the modern university. His rigour and foresight about the possibilities and, perhaps more so, the pitfalls of fitting architecture and art into a template based on the positive sciences have been foundational for a whole generation of scholars and practitioners in Belgium and beyond. At the same time Verschaffel has been an active critic and curator in the visual arts throughout his career, acting as a scriptwriter for television documentaries on the arts from Thierry De Cordier to Jan Fabre.

Based on the data from the Next Generation Virgo cluster Survey (NGVS), we statistically study the photometric properties of globular clusters (GCs), ultra-compact dwarfs (UCDs) and dwarf nuclei in the Virgo core (M87) region. We found an obvious negative color (g - z) gradient in GC system associate with M87, i.e. GCs in the outer regions are bluer. However, such color gradient does not exist in UCD system, neither in dwarf nuclei system around M87. In addition, we found that many UCDs are surrounded by extended, low surface brightness envelopes. The dwarf nuclei and UCDs show different spatial distributions from GCs, with dwarf nuclei and UCDs (especially for the UCDs with visible envelopes) lying at larger distances to the Virgo center. These results support the view that UCDs (at least for a fraction of UCDs) are more tied to dwarf nuclei than to GCs.

In the early nineteenth century, the small house in its own garden formed a crucial image of agricultural reform in Britain and in the aspirations of those leaving for North America and Australasia. The material and social technologies of the ‘cottage’ became not only equipment for the colonial enterprise, but a kind of colonization of the home by a new kind of family. These issues are apparent in J. C. Loudon's Encyclopaedia where the whole gamut of architecture is re-examined as a subject of interest to agricultural reformers, colonists, democrats and homemakers, especially women.

‘Urbanism’ has become a familar posture among architects, so familiar that it has recently become a target for ridicule. The actual developments of cities today make the neo-Sitte-esque contextualism of the 1970s look even more Utopian than the International Style. There are many and varied socio-economic and political determinants in many differing situations which might explain the hopes of the past and their distance from the realities of the present. However, much of the problem with urbanism is not to do with actual urban conditions or the success or failure of particular projects, but rather with how the concept of urbanism was framed in the architectural profession and academy. It ought still to be possible to develop a few operative concepts and a way of having a shared discourse on the architectural aspects of city sites. But at the moment we are caught between vast rhetorical claims for such work as ‘theory’; and a new naturalism that sees the city as generic global and beyond architecture. These notes are intended as a provocation both to the institutionalisation of urbanism and to the idea that it has become passé.
